Draw Your Day

I recently moved house and didn't draw anything for about a month, so I set myself a 'draw your day' challenge to get drawing back into my routine. I originally planned to do it for the whole month of August, but I found it had served its purpose by the 12th (that is, I had started to have other ideas again), so I stopped there.

I learned a few things doing these too, like that William Morris pattern only has 3 hues. I would never have realised without copying it!

Inktober 2014 - part 5

Day 25 - cartridge pen. This is the same pen I use for ink and water, but without the water there's no way to correct my horrible perspective.

Day 26 - fineliner, grey pens and ink painter. This is the same Derwent fineliner and one of their new ink paint pens that I was given at LICAF. Nettle and Spider are not really the same height, but they look more dramatic this way.

Day 27 - g-pen. Since I drew Chiihon, here's her friend the Devil Boy, who is a pre-Disaster vrega. Their planet was not a nice place to live back then. (It's not now either, but at least it doesn't make your teeth fall out any more.)

27.5 - ink and water. My manager wanted me to draw a lightbulb in ink, so I did.

Day 28 - g-pen. I think I made Nettle too short this time. She probably wants the hug but doesn't really know how to express that, so she'll just stand there awkwardly until it stops.

Day 29 - brush pen. Meruch likes to carry Violet because otherwise all he can see is the top of her head.

Day 30 - mapping pen. Ely's toenails are just as long and gross as her fingernails.

Music Zine Highlights

Some highlights from the new issue of This Is Not A Serious Music Publication. I was introduced to a lot of new music this year, so it was much easier to come up with feature ideas than last time!

Sammy's already put this issue up for sale in her shop.

January Challenge - Observational Drawings pt. 3

Woops, these are a bit late! Here's the last batch of observational drawings from the January challenge. Near the end of the month I started drawing objects from my Treasure Box, which is a small cardboard box containing items of sentimental value. It's... mostly essentially rubbish. Things like old coins, lost keys and sea glass. Most of it I wouldn't be too upset if it got lost, but I'd never deliberately throw it away.

And that's all for January, next is Fanart February!

January Challenge - Observational Drawings pt. 2

Here's the second batch of observational drawings. Originally I had planned for most of January's drawings to be done outside, because I find environments difficult and drawing from life is the best way to improve, but I hadn't factored in how cold it would be out there. I don't feel the cold very much, but it does make my hands seize up, and I nearly dropped my sketchbook in the river once already this year.

I still want to improve my environments, so I'll probably do a specific landscapes/environments challenge later in the year.

I also post these on tumblr and facebook.

January Challenge - Observational Drawings pt. 1

Here's the first monthly challenge of 2014 - observational drawings! I wanted to start the year with something fairly easy, as I haven't been feeling very well, so observational drawing seemed like a good choice. It's also a very good habit to be in.

For later challenges I might upload them every day, but for now I'll put them in batches of 10 or so. If you'd like to see them every day as I draw them you can find them that was on my tumblr or facebook page.

Dress Timeline

I still haven’t got round to scanning my Sketchavember pics, so until then here are some observational sketches.

While my little sister was visiting here in Bath we went to the Fashion Museum. They had a timeline of dresses from 1800 to 1900 (loosely) showing the changing silhouette and the fashions for different fabrics. The ones from the early 1800s looked like the comfiest thing, but the late Victorian dresses were so stylish. There was also a special display of black evening-wear, but it wasn't very clearly labelled so I'm not sure how old one of the dresses was.

If you're wondering why the timelines go backwards... that's because I'm left-handed, so I start on the right-most edge of each page. Not ideal for chronological order.
