Fret and Larkspur

At long last, pictures of Fret and Larkspur in colour, so you can all actually see a major part of the character designs I never, ever show! Also, I’ve finally worked out how to get muted colours out of my coloured pencils, it’s only taken 18 years…

Sympathy with their environment makes elves of their type rapidly change appearance to match the plants and light where they live. Fret lives in a birch grove and therefore resembles a birch tree, Larkspur once lived in a beech forest and looked very different, but now she lives in a fetid marsh and appears sodden and mud-flecked, with hair like reeds. Fret had spent a century believing she had burned to death with her forest, and didn’t recognise her at first.

A Garden Party

This was my little sister's birthday card this year. I almost always draw her a Spring flower fairy, since Spring flowers are one of her favourite things, but this year I was inspired by some strange illustrations of personified flowers from the late 19th century and tried something a little different.

Mixed Media!

I don't often do any mixed media, so these were a fun experiment, prompted by a realisation that doing a space background in coloured pencil would take more time than I was willing to invest in Steven Universe fanart. They're not very mixed, since they're only watercolour paint and watercolour pencil, but I'm pleased with them in any case.

I have several more pictures of Blue and Yellow Diamond half-finished, just so you're forewarned.

Squidmaid

Another piece from the dark days of computer issues.

This is an example double-page spread from a children's book concept, in which a girl descends through different levels of the ocean in a bathysphere. The full book would have a double page per ocean region, and probably some extra pages in the back with facts about the real sea life that appears and the development of the bathysphere and such.

I realised I never posted these diagrams I drew last year! I've been working on some non-fiction illustrations to expand my portfolio.

Baby Portraits - Effie

Since I’ve recently added a commissions page, here’s one I did this January as a christening present. I’ve done these baby portraits that incorporate birth information several times before, but I think this is my favourite so far.
I was given no guidelines aside from ‘they like purple and butterflies’, so I was a little relieved when I heard it had gone down well with the parents!
