Baby Portraits - Effie

Since I’ve recently added a commissions page, here’s one I did this January as a christening present. I’ve done these baby portraits that incorporate birth information several times before, but I think this is my favourite so far.
I was given no guidelines aside from ‘they like purple and butterflies’, so I was a little relieved when I heard it had gone down well with the parents!

January Challenge - Observational Drawings pt. 2

Here's the second batch of observational drawings. Originally I had planned for most of January's drawings to be done outside, because I find environments difficult and drawing from life is the best way to improve, but I hadn't factored in how cold it would be out there. I don't feel the cold very much, but it does make my hands seize up, and I nearly dropped my sketchbook in the river once already this year.

I still want to improve my environments, so I'll probably do a specific landscapes/environments challenge later in the year.

I also post these on tumblr and facebook.

January Challenge - Observational Drawings pt. 1

Here's the first monthly challenge of 2014 - observational drawings! I wanted to start the year with something fairly easy, as I haven't been feeling very well, so observational drawing seemed like a good choice. It's also a very good habit to be in.

For later challenges I might upload them every day, but for now I'll put them in batches of 10 or so. If you'd like to see them every day as I draw them you can find them that was on my tumblr or facebook page.

2014 Monthly Challenges

This is exactly what it sounds like! For every month in 2014 I'll be setting myself a drawing challenge. My list of personal projects is very restricted this year (to prevent a repeat of last year when I took on far too many and ended up abandoning the bigger, more important ones for time reasons) but I might go a bit mad if I spend all year doing projects that need too much planning and research and don't produce any finished drawings until September. I really enjoyed doing Inktober last year, so monthly challenges seemed like a good idea.

Like Inktober, I'm planning to do a lot of drawing-per-day challenges, but I might also do something like trying to create a whole comic or picture book in a single month. We'll see! In the interests of easing into the habit and not burning myself out right at the start, January's challenge is just to do an observational drawing every day. I've already decided to do fanart next month, so I can call it 'Fanart February', because I'm very easily amused. After that, I'll decide as I go along!

I hope everyone will enjoy seeing the results! I'll be trying to post the pictures daily on tumblr, or my facebook page.
